POD BLOG: THE BASICS – PART 1

So you’re thinking about creating your very own Podcast. Congratulations on taking the plunge! The good news is that with all the helpful tools available to you it’s actually easier than you think! But before you embark on this journey there are a few things you need to keep in mind…

YOUR LEVEL OF COMMITMENT:
Before speaking into that glorious microphone you really need to be honest with yourself on how much time you will be able to dedicate to producing your Podcast. Completing one show is great and all, but in order to build any sort of dedicated following you should be delivering regular shows (weekly or daily) which can be any length you prefer.

Most analysis reveals that listeners have a relatively short attention span in today’s social media world BUT if you have an entertaining and engaging Podcast you will be able to go a full hour and still build up a dedicated group of listeners eager for your programming. Personally, because I am most familiar with a public radio format, I prefer a full hour because it gives me enough time to allow the audience to get to know my guest and the topics we cover. That said, feel free to create a 20 or 30 minute Podcast if that feels better (and is less overwhelming) for you. But whatever you do stick to your type of distribution; whether it be daily, weekly, or monthly. Just stick to it!

THE LOOK AND FEEL:
Another critical aspect of a successful Podcast is how it is branded. In other words does the name, logo and description entice a potential listener enough to take the valuable time to see if you’re worth listening to? When considering the name of your Podcast take in consideration limiting confusion or naming it some vague title that has nothing to do with the content. Of course you can always name your program THE [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE] SHOW but unless your name is well known you could risk being like so many other Podcasts. If you want to include your name consider adding something else to the title to make it stand out.

My Podcast is titled OUT OF THE BOX WITH CHRISTINE because it focuses on thinking “outside of the box” on issues and concerns relating to health, wealth, love and life in general. While my cast is broad in the variety of topics I like to cover, you may want to consider narrowing down the focus to become a niche Podcast, such as REAL ESTATE TIPS WITH TRACY or RELATIONSHIP COACHING BY CRAIG. If you are not attached to having your name be part of the branding then you can get creative with your title to convey what it is you want people to know. Helpful tip: Whatever you are thinking about naming it, you want to do a simple search for other podcasts to make sure you won’t have the same title as someone else.

When it comes to creating your new logo there are several ways to go…if you are extremely crafty of course you can do it yourself but if you’re a tad weak on the artsy front there is always outsourcing. You can find hundreds of freelancers on sites such as FIVERR or you can join a Facebook group of professionals who specialize in logo design or branding. I am a member of - and highly recommend for you wonder women entrepreneurs out there - Women Helping Women Entrepreneurs on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenbizowners/).

EQUIPMENT:
The most amazing aspect of producing your own podcast is the fact that you don’t need a professional multi million dollar studio. You can do so much with a relatively low budget if you plan accordingly and get the right software and equipment. Personally I have produced a weekly hour long podcast for over two years with just a laptop computer, an Audio Technica ATR2500-USB microphone and Cool Edit Pro software for capturing and editing my interviews.

DELIVERY AND DISTRIBUTION:
So you have already cleverly created your show’s name and have an amazing eye catching logo to match. You have also decided to launch a weekly podcast and just recorded your very first program with an exciting guest. Now you are ready to get it out to the masses. But first you need a Podcast Host. There are several to choose from and really the best choice is what you feel most comfortable with both in price and in personal preferences. I use Podbean. Why? Because it is extremely easy and intuitive in set up and I have had zero issues with it since launching my podcast. If you’d like to get started on Podbean click the banner below..
