YOU CAN’T IGNORE THE PULL: How Intuition, Redirection and Visibility Help You Build a Life You Love
I’ve learned to trust the nudge.
That quiet pull. The strange familiarity with a stranger. The urge to say yes to something that makes absolutely no logical sense at the time. You can call it intuition, God, the universe, or love — but I’ve come to believe it’s often the doorway to your next chapter.
My own path hasn’t been linear. I went from broadcast journalism and radio studios in Los Angeles to building a coaching business and a life in Sydney. Along the way, I wrote a quirky AOL column, stepped on air terrified and shaking, lost a job that helped raise millions for charity, navigated heartbreak, and boarded a last-minute flight during a global pandemic with one suitcase, my microphone, and my laptop.
What I know now is this: none of it was random.
Below are 10 lessons drawn from my lived experience and my work as an Expert Authority Coach — mindset shifts, creative tools, and practical steps to help you honour the pull, reframe endings, and build a visible brand that actually feels like you.
1. Recognise the pull — your intuition deserves your attention
That tug you feel when an idea keeps returning, or when you feel prompted to reach out to someone — that’s not noise. I call it the pull. It might be nudging you to start something, leave something, apply for something, or simply have a conversation.
The first step is naming it and giving it permission to exist.
Try this:
Keep a “pull journal.” Write down when you feel a nudge, what it feels like, and one tiny action you could take.
Start with micro-moves — a DM, a short email, ten minutes of research.
Ask yourself: What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? and What’s the smallest step I can take today?
2. Reframe loss as redirection — endings are rarely the end
Layoffs. Breakups. Doors slamming shut. I’ve experienced all of them, and at the time they felt devastating. But in hindsight, each one cleared the path to something I couldn’t have accessed otherwise.
Losing a radio role and a relationship that shattered trust redirected me into coaching, podcasting, and ultimately into a new life overseas.
When something ends, ask:
What might this be making room for?
What strengths did this experience develop in me?
What’s one action I can take toward the life I actually want now?
3. Say yes before you feel ready — fear is part of the initiation
My first on-air experience was terrifying. I was shaking, riddled with impostor syndrome — and then something magical happened. I realised that readiness usually comes after you show up, not before.
Waiting until you feel confident often means waiting forever.
When fear shows up:
Prepare three simple talking points as a safety net.
Create a short calming ritual before you begin.
Treat every attempt as data, not a verdict on your worth.
4. Trust that the net appears — but prepare wisely
When I booked a last-minute flight to Australia during the early days of the pandemic, I left behind comfort and certainty. I packed only essentials — passport, documents, microphone, laptop. It wasn’t reckless optimism; it was strategic simplicity paired with trust in my own resourcefulness.
A practical leap mindset includes:
Keeping critical documents digitised and backed up.
Having a basic “go-bag” for sudden pivots.
Maintaining a small financial or support buffer so you can move without panic.
5. If you’re not seen and heard, you’re not hired
I say this bluntly because it’s true. Visibility creates opportunity. People work with those they feel they know and trust — which means showing up in ways that communicate your energy, not just your credentials.
Simple visibility wins:
Start a podcast or guest on others’ shows.
Record short videos answering common client questions.
Repurpose everything — one conversation can fuel blogs, emails, clips, and posts.
6. Authenticity out-converts perfection
Over-polished brands feel suspicious. People crave real connection. Vulnerability, humanity, and even the occasional stumble make you relatable and magnetic.
Ways to show up more authentically:
Share lessons alongside wins.
Let people see behind the scenes.
Write and speak like a human, not a brochure.
7. Your brand is your energy — confusion repels clients
I often call myself a “website whisperer” because I can spot disconnects quickly. One confusing image, unclear message, or mismatched tone can quietly drive people away — even if your work is excellent.
Quick brand clarity check:
Can visitors understand what you do in 10 seconds?
Do they see you immediately?
Does your imagery match how you want clients to feel?
Is there one clear next step?
Do you have a professional headshot that actually reflects your energy?
8. Niche down without shrinking
“I help everyone with everything” helps no one. Clarity converts. You don’t lose opportunities by narrowing your message — you gain trust.
To niche without feeling boxed in:
Write to one real person.
Define the main problem you solve and the transformation you deliver.
Name your offer clearly and specifically.
9. Use your voice strategically — it builds trust fast
My background in radio taught me how powerful audio is. Podcasting builds authority, improves discoverability, and allows people to experience your thinking and heart. Every conversation sharpens your message.
Start simply:
One episode a month is enough.
Pitch guest spots with a clear, aligned topic.
Turn each conversation into multiple content assets.
10. Build through referrals and energetic alignment
Much of my business has grown through word-of-mouth. Referrals flow when you do exceptional work and make it easy for people to recommend you. I also trust my intuition when someone feels like a client — that signal matters.
Referral-friendly habits:
Create a “wow” moment for every client.
Ask for introductions and provide a simple script.
Publicly thank referrers (with permission).
A simple checklist to act on the pull this week
Journal for 10 minutes about one recent pull and take one small action.
Audit your homepage for clarity and presence.
Create one piece of content that shows your personality.
Reach out to one person who could refer you and say thank you.
“If you’re not seen and heard, you’re not hired.”
That line isn’t about performance. It’s about allowing your work, wisdom, and energy to reach the people who need it.
Final thought: trust the process and keep creating
Trusting the pull isn’t reckless. It’s a blend of listening, taking small steps, and building visible work that reflects who you are. My path — from AOL columnist to radio host to Expert Authority Coach, from Los Angeles to Sydney — is proof that intuition, courage, and clarity compound over time.
If you want a next step right now, answer these three prompts:
What pulled me recently?
What’s one tiny action I’ll take?
What’s one piece of visibility content I’ll create this month?
Then put it on your calendar. Momentum begins with one visible step.
And remember — you don’t need all the answers.
Just start with the pull.
